Quesada Gardens Initiative - Growing a Community

September 19th, 2008 foust

The Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco has struggled with many issues including drugs, gangs, violence, prostitution, environmental justice, poverty, lack of access to healthy food, and more.  Quesada Gardens Initiative is bringing residents together around the common goal of improving their streets and their quality of life.

They’re building community by giving residents a voice, access to information, and multiple projects and events to participate in.  Positive change is occurring through public art projects, outdoor film screenings, fruit harvesting, dances, backyard edible gardening, community gardens, and more.  Jeffrey Betcher, James Ross, and Shane King took the time recently to tell us about what it takes to grow a community.

Take a listen.

Junk Salvage

August 28th, 2008 foust

There’s a lot of junk out there that creative and resourceful people are saving from the landfills and infusing with new life. We visit a store located at a landfill and talk with the manager and some regular customers about what they see and what they buy/sell. Down the street, we visit a true junk artist and hear about the source of his creations. Then we visit a big city recycling facility, learn about their innovative program for artists to utilize junk, and talk to an artist in residence about what she’s seeing.

Take a listen.
