Introducing: e-volvedliving

July 26th, 2010 dorothy

Tomorrow marks the 6 week anniversary of being in our new home here in San Rafael, Marin County, CA! We’re pretty excited to be here.  Our home, neighborhood, town, and the surrounding area feel like a good fit on so many levels – and all of the important ones! Words really can’t describe how happy that makes these 4 (Dorothy, Jeph, Sid, and Bazel) road weary former gypsies. So, in that spirit, a new site is born: e-vovledliving.com/living. You’ll find us there regularly, writing about all the elements of living a happy, healthy, holistic life at 120 D Street.

Topics include:

  • setting up our home/office/studio for maximum productivity, comfort, and pleasure; and being positive forces in the world through our daily choices and actions
  • the creative process and what we’re producing in our workshop
  • getting dirty – digging, raking, pruning, planting, composting, watching things grow
  • Jeph’s bike thang – building, repairing, and riding (occasionally I join him!)
  • exploring our neighborhood and connecting with local communities
  • exploring the rest of Marin County and beyond and sharing good times with our friends

New Coast, Latest Projects

July 9th, 2010 foust

Studio Freshh has been offline for a few months as we moved our studio from one coast to the other. Now comfortably residing back in the SF Bay Area, we are powering things up, picking up momentum on several large projects, and launching some new projects.

One of our latest is a short documentary about the New Hampshire maple sugaring process.  Here are a few choice photos from the shoot to give you a taste of the mapley flavor.

Note: Normally there would be a lot more snow and it would be much colder in early March in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  We got lucky with some beautiful, sunny, warm weather and bare ground, but it really shortened the sugaring season.

PAH-Fest – Story Concept and Development, Thank-Yous

October 31st, 2009 dorothy

This project would not have been possible without the inspiration for the piece, Ann Herold’s ‘Winging It: My Year of Looking for the Insanely Beautiful, Life-Changing Birds of Los Angeles’, Los Angeles Magazine, March 2009. It’s a beautifully written story about the amazing diversity of terrain and wildlife in the greater Los Angeles area, and gets to the heart of what compels and resonates within bird lovers. I was touched after reading it, and also motivated to get out and start exploring/looking/listening.

When we found out we’d been selected to participate in PAH-Fest, we had 4 days to prep before shooting started. I contacted Ann with my story concept and got a prompt and enthusiastic reaction, along with excellent birder and location suggestions throughout the week.  We couldn’t have done it without her.

Below you’ll find the original proposal. One thing that became clear very quickly was that there is so much to this story that could be explored and told, way more than 5 days production and 6 minutes of film would allow. There was so much material we gathered this week and had to set aside/cut. We didn’t get to follow Ann, or any birders, around and learn their methods and hear their thoughts in the field. We weren’t able to really dig into the science and conservation themes. There is way more I’d like to explore there, as well as expanding on the human/bird connection and spiritual element.  So, this may grow into a bigger project, but should probably wait until our Flint Punk Rock doc is finished.

Others who made this project possible:

Christopher Coppola – For the PAH-Fest vision.  In a business, and world, full of battling egos and self interest, we can’t imagine a more inclusive, supportive, and down-to-earth experience.  We learned a lot, about production, about the creative process, and about team work.

The PAH Nation Team, and Sponsors - Managed the logistics with ease.  Provided all the tools and kept us fed!

The Madonna University gang – The heart of mobiflicks base camp.  Always there when we needed them (even at 3AM!)  What a pleasant surprise to have a bunch of Michiganders in the house!  Having just arrived in LA, it was so nice to be able to talk about Kensington Metropark, koegels, the Red Wings, and other home state favorites.

Arlyn - What can I say?  We got really lucky with Arlyn.  He provided the perfect combination of technical knowledge, process guidance, creative ideas, and support, and put up with Team Foust/LaRue’s occasional head-butting and differences in approach.  I can’t imagine how different the week would have gone without him.

Dana and Luis - More luckiness here.  My original idea for soundtrack was something in the vein of the RZA’s Ghost Dog soundtrack w/ a little DJ Shadow thrown in.  More time would have allowed us to play w/ incorporating that vibe, but this was a great opportunity to develop and exercise the flexibility muscles.  They got the tone I wanted to set for the film, right away -meditative, contemplative – and delivered multiple beautiful pieces for us to use.  The viola really lends itself to birds flying which was extra cool.

Martin - A real gift, on super short notice.   He is incredibly passionate about protecting the birds, their habitats, and the planet.  We had a great conversation for over an hour and that audio is instrumental in telling our story.  I am so grateful there are people like Martin who make it their mission to protect our precious resources and get other people interested.  I hope that we can go out into nature with him sometime and learn more about how to really look and listen.

Martha – Martha was very generous with her time and the information she shared.  I just showed up at the Audubon House here in West Hollywood’s Plummer Park and told her what we were up to and she agreed to be filmed.  She talked to us about local hummingbirds (much smaller than what we’ve seen in MI/MA/the Bay Area), the importance of native gardening, and good places to see birds this time of year.  She recommended Sepulveda Basin which provided us with great footage of water birds like herons, egrets, coots, cormorants, and more.  She’s got a fun and lively personality and clearly loves birds and nature.

The birds and planet earth -Humans are blessed to have access to the resources of the planet.  It provides us with air/water/food and energy and the ability to connect with the infinite wisdom, rhythm, guidance, and beauty of life.  That connection has always been strong for me, but this project reminded me how powerful and critically important it is.  And, as Martin and Ann both describe, birds give you faith in the resilience and potential of life.

PAH-Fest Mobiflicks Competition Proposal, October 2009

We will follow Ann Herold (‘Winging It: My Year of Looking for the Insanely Beautiful, Life-Changing Birds of Los Angeles’, Los Angeles Magazine, March 2009) (or another passionate and knowledgeable bird enthusiast) as she traverses Los Angeles, in search of birds. While shadowing her, we’ll delve into the history of bird species in the area, and learn about fascinating sub-topics such as: migration, extinction, predator and prey, and humans’ effect on habitat.

We will peek into private backyard sanctuaries, meet other birders, and hear what really inspires/compels them. In unlikely urban settings and remote canyons we’ll be delighted to glimpse birds in action. And we will observe the techniques and tools of the professional.

The diverse terrain of the city will be spotlighted through wide angle shots of habitats and intimate shots of the trees, shrubs, ground, and structures of the birds’ realm. And, for a city without major seasonal distinction, observing bird patterns and habits will provide a sense of that rhythm.

The sky in all its bright blue clarity, foggy intrigue, and pastel sunset splendor will serve as backdrop to capture the true distinction of the winged creature: flight. We will meditate (through narration, words on screen, soundtrack, and/or audio overlay of field recordings) on the freedom of this physical capability, the many interpretations (from crows’ dynamic acrobatics, to hummingbirds rapid work ethic…), and what humans think and feel while observing birds in flight (perhaps some narrated or textual quotes from Los Angeles naturalists on this.)

PAH-Fest – Edit Days

October 30th, 2009 dorothy

Wednesday was all about logging the video,  selecting audio clips, giving direction/feedback to the composers, and creating the story outline.

Thursday was the deep thicket of editing.  Arlyn’s experience w/ Adobe Premier came in quite handy.  Jeph’s more a Vegas and Final Cut guy, but came up to speed quickly and stayed on course for a hell of an 18 hour day.  We left LA City College (PAH-Fest base camp) at 3 AM Friday having met our goal of a solid rough cut (the dinnertime lattes definitely kept us focused and energized)!  Late night burritos that Christopher Coppola provided also hit the spot,

Back at work at 10 AM, we had a full day of polishing and prettying.

~5:30PM and Jeph’s just doing some luxury clean up.  The original deadline was 3PM today, and we had a good product at that point, but the extra time they’ve given the teams has allowed us to work on our wish list items.  I’m thrilled we had a chance to apply some fun fx to our opening title.  That was one of those images I’d had in mind since almost the beginning.

The title, on the other hand, did not come easily…it’s one of those things that would have been great to have one more night to sleep on.   I had a list of 5 options and the team (Jeph, Arlyn, and our wonderful composers/musicians, Dana, and Luis) was thankfully able to steer us to the ultimate choice.

Creating by the seat of your pants is a pretty cool process, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to do that this week.  (More thoughts on that process later, in a future post, after some sleep!)  I give Christopher Coppola a lot of credit, and respect, for bringing the storytelling tools and support to people just aching to create and share.

PAH-Fest – Shoot Days

October 29th, 2009 dorothy

We covered a lot of ground in our quest to really capture the diversity of ecosystems and birds in Los Angeles.  Being brand new to this Gigantic metropolis, it was a grand excuse to see/experience a lot of places it might take us years (if at all) to get to.

Jeph and Arlyn, our fabulous PAH-Fest coach, at Sepulveda Basin

Jeph shooting birds (with a camera!) at Fryman Canyon

Dorothy recording bird sounds @ Fryman

Pigeons flying downtown

A few of our subjects

Here’s the full location list:

Day 1

Plummer Park in West Hollywood
Sepulveda Basin in the valley
Santa Monica streets/beach/pier

Day 2

Fryman Canyon in Studio City
covert in a cemetery
downtown park and streets
Hollowell Park in Boyle Heights

Day 3 – briefly, in AM

Plummer Park again

8  locations in 48 hours might not sound like a lot but traffic in L.A. really is as bad as everyone says and we were all over this joint (roughly 75 miles traveled to all of the locations we shot).  On Day 2 the wind got pretty crazy – ~40mph – and was tearing huge palm fronds down and dropping them on the ground.  It was kind of scary filming in the cemetery under the palms.  The gusts were blowing masses of little leaves around all afternoon and it was hard to tell what was a bird and what was a leaf.  So much dust and dirt was kicked up, we were entirely coated in it by the end of the day.  It was almost as bad as the sandstorm we encountered on our recent road trip passing through Winslow AZ.  You can’t hear, it’s hard to think, and it just batters you.

Between all that driving, the patience required for filming birds, the stiff necks, and that damn wind, it was guerrilla style.

Flint Growing Up

September 6th, 2009 dorothy

The elevator pitch competition videos were delivered earlier this week and we had a great interview shoot (2 people sharing their memories, which turned out to be a lively exchange) in Flint for the punk documentary.

Jeph setting up for a shoot at the Flint Cultural Center.  This is the very cool Flint Institute of Arts building whose shiny, bright glazed bricks we adore.

Team Foust/LaRue is moving to LA at the end of the month and will be out there next week to find a fabulous new home, so that will leave about 1 week of filming time in Flint.  As expected, the storyline is growing organically as we talk with people about those golden hall show days and how the experience has carried into life today for them.  Joel, in particular, gave us a lot of food for thought regarding Flint’s evolution and we’ve realized what a compelling story that is.  So, we’re looking to get him on camera again,  talking about the positive community development going on, including Flint Local 432, the local band venue he runs.  We’re also working on scheduling shoots with 3-4 other people (mad props to Joel for brainstorming on this) who can help connect the dots from then to now.   It’s good stuff, and Studio Freshh likes to tell positive stories about people working to improve the world, so it’s a natural fit.

Elevator Pitch Competition Videos – Shoot Day 2

August 26th, 2009 dorothy

For video 1 we shot in the U of M Provost’s office, which is currently vacant and offers a solid view of downtown Flint.  Joel pulled through despite running on 4 hours of sleep (due to preparations for an Appalachian Trail hike in VT and NH, with departure later that day.)

For video 2 (and intro to video 3) we had the talent of Nic Mihailoff, Business Mentor for LAUNCH, and an accomplished stage actor, which made for a smooth shoot.  Nic also assisted Joel with script development and, considering the fast turnaround, the scripts were tight.

Since we’re operating without external mics, we’re pulling high quality audio from the Olympus LS-10 and syncing it with the video, which slows editing down a bit.   We worked on the EDL (edit decision list) together and Jeph is ~75% done with editing, using our current standard suite: Final Cut, Motion (titles), and Soundtrack Pro (music.)  2 days until deadline, which is realistic.  Joel is back from his hiking trip early and working w/ the graphic designer to finalize a logo for the competition.  That will be incorporated as soon as it’s available to us. We’re hoping to take advantage of his early return and have a review session before we call the the videos done.

Elevator Pitch Competition Videos – Shoot Day 1

August 11th, 2009 dorothy

An old friend of Jeph’s (part of the ’80s Flint punk rock scene, and part of the Hall Show documentary) runs a small business incubator at the U of M Flint.  Joel’s group is doing a lot of creative stuff to build and foster a vibrant local economy in urban Flint.  Right now they’re preparing for an elevator pitch competition which will help students from all local colleges to hone their personal commercial, get their message out there on video, and maybe win some cash or other prizes to support their business development.   Joel brought Studio Freshh in to produce three videos for the project: 1.) announcement of the competition, rules, and logistics; 2.) description of elevator pitch purpose and components and what makes one successful; 3.) example of a well executed pitch, using Joel’s burgeoning youth arts and cultural community center as the business.

We worked on script development and shot a few takes of #3 yesterday.  More progress notes soon.

Virtuous Vinyl

August 1st, 2009 dorothy

This week we were back in Flint so Jeph could talk more extensively with Al Steel, owner of Wyatt Earp Records which played a major role in fostering the local punk scene back in the day (’80s.)  Read about it in Jeph’s Field Notes.  I enjoyed browsing through the vinyl collection and was pleasantly surprised to see that Willie Nelson has an album called Somewhere over the Rainbow (being Dorothy, that song, and the larger themes it embodies, are near and dear to me.)  His version of the title song is nice, in that soft weathered leather kind of way.

Flint – Coneys and All

July 24th, 2009 dorothy

It’s been a busy week of gathering footage for the Flint Hall Show doc – 2 interviews down, with another to go today (and more in the works.)   Jeph got his Coney on, finally, so we can check that off the list (no visit to MI is complete without). Read all about it in the Field Notes.
